Rocky Mountain Sled Dog Club Presents: Grand Mesa Summit Challenge Sled Dog Race 2019 14th Annual January 26/27th Sponsored by Guild Mortgage and Chow Down Pet Supply Location: The Mesa Top Trial Parking lot on Highway 65 going over the Grand Mesa. Our race is the highest dog sled race in North America at an elevation of 11,000 feet Races are 4, 6 or 8 miles in length. Dogs used vary from traditional Husky’s to Pointers, The dog sled race teams use 4, 6 or 8 dogs and cross country skiers are pulled by 1 to 3 dogs (Skijoring) . Races start at about 8:00 am and the last race finishes about 2:00 pm. The Rocky Mountain Sled dog Club was started in 1960 and hosts races for some of the worlds fasted sprint mushers. Any race under 20 miles is a sprint unlike the long distance races such as the Iditarod and the Yukon Quest which are 1,000 miles long. Current Club members include: John Perry an International Sled Dog Racing Association Gold Medalist in the 4 Dog, 6 Dog and 8 Dog sledding classes. John is also the World Sprint Sled Champion in both the 4 and 6 Dog sledding classes. Laurie Brandt World Champion Mountain Bike racer and last years National Bronze Medal winner in the 1 Dog Skijoring and last years Grand Mesa Summit Challenge 1st place winner in both the 1 and 2 Dog Skijoring. Laurie also just competed in the World DryLand Championships in Bike and Scooter classes held in Canada Aaron Natonewski last years National Silver Medalist in the 2 Dog Skijoring. Several Colorado Mushers and Skijorers at our race have been National and World Medalist these include Scott Amone, Fritz Howard, Step Dwyer, Janet Saxon and Kale Casey. We have two levels of races. We have Competitive Pro and Recreational.
