Back for another round of music recommendations, this week; songs of empowerment!
Alicia Keys “Underdog” A news song from Alicia Keys in 2020 is a welcome surprise as is, but to make it a passionate song about the underdog overcoming obstacles in their paths? Well, that’s just the cherry on top. It’s a fun song with a message about people being more than just their circumstances, and frankly it’s just a great song to walk to with your head held high.
Dua Lipa, “Don’t Start Now.” She’s been on the music recommended list a couple times now, and its because 1, this is my list, and 2, it’s a disco hit to play to your ex telling them how awesome you are and how not awesome they are. If that’s not empowering, I don’t know what is.
White Stripes “Seven Nation Army.” Every middle school band, amateur guitarist, or Jack White knows this song, but there’s something about the thumping baseline mixed with lyrics about fighting them off, it’s just a good pump up song, and what’s more empowering than being pumped up!
DJ Khaled & SZA, “Just Us.” Khaled’s annoying “another one” and “we da best muzick” tropes aside, SZA makes an impression with lyrics that seem to say, “yeah our back’s up against the wall, so what?” There’s a good reason this song is a staple of CMU Basketball game warmup songs.
Enjoy these musical suggestions, or don’t I’m not your mother!
