Ayyye Yo!
Max here, hope you’re well. Hope you’ve been watching as much “Braveheart” as humanly possible, as you warm up for the Grand Valley Scottish Games & Celtic Festival this weekend. Not saying that I’m painting half my face blue, nor using nudity as a shock weapon against the stodgy English..those damn underwear wearers! However…it’s a pretty cool thing if you’ve never seen it. If you have, then you know all about large, skirted men tossing their poles around. It’s called the Caber Toss, and it’s literally just a man, locked in mortal combat with his deadliest enemy…a big log.
Found some good stuff about Highlands Games Traditions, courtesy of https://www.scotland.org/events/highland-games/highland-games-traditions…be sure to check it out. Surprised me. I was hoping for actual sword fights with decapitation. THERE CAN ONL Y BE ONE! But this is much better…because nobody dies, at least…if you don’t walk in front of the shot put. I also learned the Scottish have a long history with tug of war. So there’s that.
William Wallace would be proud of our little section of the world here in Western Colorado…but in case you missed the memo, don’t invite Mel Gibson (KIDDING, MEL…sheesh). There’s other great games and feats of physical aptitude that will surprise you all weekend. Also, bag pipes rock…no matter where you’re from. There will be plenty of those. Lot’s of fun to be had. It’s at the Mesa County Fairgrounds this Saturday & Sunday, 8 am to 6 pm both days. Enjoy! And don’t forget to try the Haggis.
Much Love,
Max
